If you're looking for a German news site that is more accessible for your students, try the simplified news site www.nachrichtenleight.de.
Reading current news headlines in the target language with some existing awareness of what is going on in the world is already a good start! However, this site also includes a podcast with each article, in which the news story is read slowly and clearly. This allows you to use these 'news light' stories for authentic listening material, with the script provided.
Set your class a homework to choose one article on the site that interests them. You could give them a choice of activities to include writing a summary in English or German, translating the article, rehearsing the pronunciation of the article to match the podcast version etc. The possibilities are endless!
