The homepage of the Spanish magazine site www.muyinteresante.es has a slider of eight or nine news headlines with pictures, which are regularly updated. These are ideal for a quick translation activity for KS4-5 as a way to make authentic news very accessible. Check before the lesson that the themes of the news items are suitable for your students before projecting them!

Teaching ideas

  • Divide students into teams.
  • Project the first headline and freeze your projector.
  • Teams must discuss the best translation for the headline.
  • When everyone in the group is confident they could give a translation, the team should stand up.
  • The teacher picks any individual from the team to give the answer. No conferring at this stage!
  • If the individual makes a mistake, everyone sits down until another team is ready to stand and translate.
  • Award points and project the next suitable headline.
  • KS3 or lower ability students could race to give the gist of what the article is about.
